Madalyn Yates

This edition of Styled Spotlight we are featuring Madalyn Yates, owner of Madalyn Yates Photography. Madalyn is a brand photographer based in North Carolina, a graduate of The School of Styling’s Homeschool Program, and an attendee of our November 2020 workshop!

As an involved member of the TSOS community, we were excited to sit down with her ( – virtually of course) to learn more about her business, creative process, and life as a female entrepreneur.

When asked what she loved most about being a small business owner, Madalyn said that there a lots of things she enjoyed. For her, one perk was the ability to be her own boss and the flexibility that comes with it.

Above all the thing that she really loves most is the relationships she gets to build and foster with each one of her clients. “I truly believe that a strong client experience starts with the relationships that we build even before they book!” ….We could not agree more!

As a small business owner herself, Madalyn knows what it means to truly bond with an audience and create those special relationships. One of the things that helped her decide that branding photography was her passion was how closely she was able to work with her clients. Madalyn approaches branding photography as more than just gorgeous headshots for marketing & content creation. To her, branding photography is a way to let your ideal clients know who you are and why you do what you do. She says “Serving you and encouraging you is so special to me – each small business is different so each branding experience is so unique. It’s a beautiful process to see from start to finish!”

Speaking of process, we asked Madalyn to share what her creative process looks like, and here is what she had to say!

“The experience starts with a vision call to walk through your WHAT and your WHY, as well as dig deeper into what the benefits of branding photography is. From there, we create a digital mood board the contains inspiration for you and your work”

Aside from the actual branding session, helping her clients design their mood boards is one of her favorite parts in the whole process.

“Together we organize outfits, locations, different props that you should include, colors to use & other photographs that inspire you! Once we have a solid foundation there, I give you a few fun homework assignments that will help you with content creation, really figuring your mindset for your experience, and actually creating a physical mini mood board! And then, shoot day arrives and you start the day by getting pampered with hair & make-up followed by three hours of photographing! Once we’ve popped the champagne, I go home and have sneak peeks ready within twelve hours & a final gallery in two weeks for you to marvel over and share with your audience!”

The School of Styling knows first hand how important brand images are for our business, but we also wanted to get Madalyn’s take on how branding benefits her clientele. What she shared with us was eyeopening. Madalyn walked us though how investing in the branding experience you walk away with:

  • Confidence in your passion
  • A clear direction in how to use your new content for marketing & social media
  • Behind the scenes content so you can show your ideal client step by step of your service and or product
  • lifestyle headshots so your audience can get to know you!

Madalyn wants you to be excited to share your content with your audience and having a gallery of photographs that showcase your heart is just the beginning. More than that though, she wants you walk away knowing she is in your corner and that she is going to be your biggest cheerleader from then on out!

Our final question for Madalyn about her experience in out Homeschool Program. When asked how Homeschool – our 6 week group coaching program- helped with achieving her goals Madalyn said this:

“I really needed a community of like-minded women to help me go from point A to point B and that is exactly what Homeschool did for me. Not only was I able to make a confident switch from one to the other, I was also able to plan & launch a workshop which was a pipe dream for me! Aside from the work that Homeschool helped me with, the encouragement from Logan and the other 12 members was so inspiring for me; it’s so important to have a tribe of people around you when you’re in the small business world! I can’t wait to continue to see each of them reach their goals!”

We can’t thank Madalyn enough for being apart of our community and we are so inspired by her entrepreneurial journey!
