Bev Weidner Home Tour | Minimalist Home Design | The School of Styling - A three-day, hands-on workshop for creative entrepreneurs. theschoolofstyling.com

Name: Bev Weidner / Age: 40 / Profession: Food and Lifestyle Blogger/Burper / Blog Title: Bev Cooks / City, State: Prairie Village, KS (basically Kansas City) / Years in Home: 9! Whoa.

We love your blog, Bev Cooks! How did you get started blogging? Do you want the long version, the longer version, or the longest version? Here are the bullet points (I love bullet points): I had a day job. I had a sad face. I was infertile. My baseboards were dirty. I wanted to go on jogs, not think about my lack of pregnancy, and watch my garden tomatoes grow. So, one snowy January morning as Aaron and I were making the bed, and I was mentally crunching financial numbers, I took a deep breath and cautiously said, “I want to quit my job.” And his response? “I’ve been waiting for you to say that for a long time.” Boom! A few weeks later I was home (not cleaning my baseboards) and decided to take the plunge, buy a domain and start writing an official food blog. This was March of 2011. Before that I had a little Tumblr do-dad, since the fall of 2010. But I feel like the domain was the TRUE true start of blogdom. Wait, are you asleep?

What advice would you give to entrepreneurs and small business owners? Save. Every. Receipt. Deductions are your friends, yo. (And also the whole “don’t give up on your dreams, keep it a passion”-thing, yadda yadda yadda.)

Let’s chat about your lovely home! How would you describe your style or aesthetic to someone who has never visited? Well, I’ve been told it has a Scandinavian vibe to it, and I can totally see that. I really love a clean, minimal look. Lots of neutrals and naturals. White walls, lots of big plants, simple accents. Except rugs. Aaron hates rugs and won’t let me have any. He says they’re the Devil’s crevices. Whatever. I’m SNEAKING IN A RUG.

Where do you find inspiration for home design? Do you have any favorite books, blogs or a dream house whose style you love? I find inspiration everywhere! I love Kinfolk magazine, clean-aesthetic pinterest boards, other Instagram homes, etc. Even just walking into a home decor store can offer twinkles of inspiration. Oh! Let’s start a band called Twinkles of Inspiration. (we’d suck.)

What is your advice for creating a well-styled house that is also functional for a family? I know this is going to sound mega cliché, but keep it simple! I find that using natural elements can dress up a corner or table better than anything. Clippings from a backyard tree in an amber bottle, a small collection of homemade candles, broken twigs and mosquito wings woven into a fishtail hair braid. (<—just kidding on that last one)

Do you have any tips for finding budget-friendly, kid-friendly pieces? What’s your favorite place to get new home furniture and/or decor? I a d o r e thrifting. Always have. I’ve always been budget conscious, so any chance we get to hit a garage or estate sale, we’re on it! I love old things. Pieces that have a story. Don’t get me wrong, I shop at Home Goods like a maniac, but my favorite finds are those one-of-a-kind thrifted gems.

What is your favorite spot in the house and why? Definitely the kitchen. It’s the most recent renovation (inside the house), and it’s the cleanest. And by clean I mean the vibe. Not the actual room. I have twins, remember? I love the kitchen because there are always fresh flowers on the window sill, it smells like coffee, and it just always feels so homey to me.

Do you have any future plans or dreams for your home? Next on the list is the basement! I have no idea why I put an exclamation point at the end of the most unexciting word in the world. But we’d love to really pimp it out with a new laundry area, a playroom, update the bathroom, and make it a lot cozier for guests who stay here. I’ll let you know when that’s done in 2087. (send wine)
